Sketch of the diplomatic controversy occasioned by the visit of an American vessel from Lake Erie, to the shores of Spain and Morocco, 1863.

Relates the controversy surrounding the schooner Republican, captained by Stephen Coville and bound from Huron, Ohio to Cadiz, Spain with a cargo of staves. The schooner was refused admittance to the ports of Cadiz, Spain and, subsequently Tangier, Morocco, where Brown was U.S. consul. Brown also discusses the possibilities of transatlantic trade in vessels from the Great Lakes.
